LE MIROIR AU CINÉMA : Un emblème de la dimension spectaculaire de l’image cinématographique

Résumé : Le miroir est un motif iconographique et cinématographique important car il est associé à une symbolique riche : il peut ainsi représenter la connaissance du monde et l’introspection aussi bien que la vanité et la mort, mais également car il est une métaphore de la peinture puisqu’il propose comme elle une image qui est une représentation de la réalité, et une métaphore de l’art pictural en général. La présence du miroir dans une scène au cinéma peut l’enrichir en sens et introduire un procédé de mise en abyme, mais elle est soumise à des difficultés techniques, notamment car la caméra ne peut se positionner face à un miroir, sous peine de filmer son propre reflet. Pour résoudre ces difficultés, la prise de vue avec des miroirs peut donc devenir la démonstration d’un savoir-faire technique et ainsi augmenter la dimension spectaculaire d’une scène. Le miroir est en effet un objet qui permet de « réfléchir » à la relation entre une image, qui figure un spectacle de la réalité, et une personne qui la regarde, c’est-à-dire un spectateur.

Abstract:The mirror is an important iconographic and film pattern because it offers a wealth of symbolism. The mirror can represent knowledge and introspection as well as vanity and death. It is also a significant pattern since it can also be considered a metaphor of painting as such, because as the later, it offers an image which is the representation of reality; that is why the
mirror turns out to be a metaphor of pictorial or visual arts. The presence of a mirror in a film scene can enhance its meaning and add a mise en abyme process, yet it also produces technical constraints. Indeed, the film camera cannot place itself in front of a mirror, because it would film its own reflection. In order to resolve these problems, shooting with mirrors may become a demonstration of technical skills and thus increase the spectacular dimension of a scene. In this way, the mirror used in a film scene is an object that both allows to “reflect” upon the link between an image – which depicts a spectacle of reality – and the person who watches it, that is the audience.
