Résumé : Pourquoi la forêt au Cinéma nous semble-t-elle être invariablement peuplée d’oiseaux divers et sans importance ? De cette question ingénue est né le projet de cette étude de la mise en scène sonore de la forêt. Afin de la mener à bien, nous nous sommes tout d’abord demandés d’où nous viennent-elles, ces « forêts », quelles relations l’humain a-t-il pu entretenir avec elles, et quelles représentations elles sous-tendent dans notre imaginaire. Ensuite, nous avons étudié son utilisation au Cinéma, exploré les raisons qui font que les oiseaux sont si souvent utilisés, et décortiqué ce qui fait la partition sonore d’une promenade en forêt dans ce média. Nous mettons par la suite en application nos connaissances afin de mieux cerner en pratique les possibilités de mise en scène sonore de la forêt au Cinéma et la manière dont on peut la faire sortir du simple cadre de « décor ».

Abstract: Why does the forest in movies seem to us to be invariably crowded by many but meaningless birds ? This ingenuous question was the starting point of this study regarding the use of sounds in movies around forest scenes. We first ask where do these « forests » come from, what kind of relationship exist with human beings, and what representations they are referring to. Then, we explore the many ways forests can be depicted through sounds in movies, and investigate the rational supporting the frequent use of birds, among others. We investigate the different categories of sound components used to build the sound of a forest walk. Lastly, we build on our knowledge to better understand in practice the various options to represent the forest through sounds and make the link between the sound approachs and the viewer perception of the forest : from a pure landscape background to something more inspirational than tangible.
